Write Optimized Web Content with this Checklist

Try these web content writing tips to improve the SEO and readability of your web pages and blog posts. Keep in mind that you only have a few seconds to get someone’s attention in an online written piece before they click away. And remember that, much like a newspaper, most people scan content first before reading in-depth.

Here are some tips to follow when writing for the web:

  • Keep to one topic/focus per page, blog post, or article.
  • Perform basic keyword research to determine good long tail keywords for your content.
  • Always have an optimized heading for your content. For web pages, this is the H1 tag.
  • Use normal reading language following proper grammar and spelling.
  • Don’t stuff too many keywords into your writing. Content should be written for readers and not for search engines.
  • Use subheadings to separate sections of your content. Don’t just use bold, larger fonts. Instead use the HTML H2, H3 tags.
  • Instead of just listing comma separated items in a paragraph, use a bullet or numbered list.
  • Cross-link to other pages on your website where appropriate. Don’t stuff links on the page. Instead link once from your text to another page when it makes sense.
  • As a rule of thumb, most SEO experts recommend using 300 or more words per web page or article. However, there is much debate about this. If you are writing an informational article, then you  may have 1,000 words or more. A contact page, may be 50 words or so.  The number of words should make sense for the topic of your page or article.
  • Specify optimized title tags and unique meta descriptions for every page.
  • Give your page a meaningful URL or file name that relates to your focus keyword.
