H1 Tag SEO Tips for Web Page Headings

Maximize H1 tag SEO by using meaningful keywords in your page headings

Each blog post or page that you create has a main heading or article title. In the website code this page heading text should go into the HTML H1 tag. H1 tag SEO helps people and search engines understand what your page is about. The H1 heading tag is visible on the page that web visitors see.

Some best practices for H1 page heading tags include:

  • Have exactly one unique H1 tag on every page.
  • The H1 tag should act as a meaningful title to the page content.
  • Use meaningful keywords in the H1 tag.
  • If it makes sense, add a geographic term to the page heading.

To create an H1 tag for your web page content, use your focus keyword phrase exactly in your H1 tag. Keep the text succinct and to the point. There is no length requirement for the H1 tag, but it should make sense to the person visiting your page so they can identify quickly what the page is about.

Optimize Your Page Headings and Post Titles

Many times, I find websites that use page headings like About Us, Contact Us, or Our Services as their H1 tag. But these examples don’t contain any meaningful search keywords.

It’s best to use some keywords like About our Chicago Chiropractic Clinic or Back Pain Relief Services in Chicago in page headings. Why? Because search engines may look at the H1 tag to determine the focus of your page. They may also choose to show your H1 tag instead of the page’s title tag on search results pages.

Google doesn’t always use the H1 tag for SEO, but that doesn’t mean your website should ignore using them.
